Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has rubbished reports suggesting that he could make a January swoop for Real Madrid's out-of-favour Dutch striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Los Merengues are eager to offload the veteran hitman and north London has been touted as a likely destination, with Tottenham Hotspur also alleged to be interested.

However, Wenger has waved away those rumours with a chuckle, pointing out that the Gunners faithful hold little affection for the former Manchester United star.

He said in The Mirror: "It would not be the best of starts, bearing in mind our past relationship! You have my number - you can text me all the names you find!"

Athletic Bilbao's late penalty miss put paid to any hopes of a dramatic late draw against a spirited Valencia side who go third in La Liga.

Goals from David Villa and Jeremy Mathieu either side of an Iker Muniain strike saw a thrilling second half at San Mames, David Lopez smashing a last-gasp spot-kick off the woodwork.

The game took a while to get going as both sides tried to impose their own style on the game. Valencia probed with their swift counterattacking, passing game while the hosts tried to bulldoze their way to Cesar's goal.

A lively Pablo Hernandez produced some excellent close control at times and seemed to pop up all over the pitch and almost fashioned an opener after 18 minutes, beating three defenders down the right but Juan Mata couldn't direct his cross on target at the near post.

The hosts refused to let Los Che settle into their rhythm and Mata's effort was as good as it got in the first 45 for the visitors. Oscar De Marcos, on for the injured Fernando Llorente added an attacking flair to Los Leones efforts but his shot, from 25 yards sailed wide as the Basque outfit failed to trouble Cesar in the first half.

The second half began in similarly tentative style with neither side asserting dominance. Ten minutes in Villa had a glorious chance to put the visitors in front after a tremendous ball over the top from Carlos Marchena. El Guaje raced clear of Mikel San Jose but with just the Gorka Iraizoz to beat, he opted for an audacious lob and miscued, much to the relief of the San Mames faithful.

A minute later the simmering atmosphere exploded into life as Iker Muniain gave the hosts the lead, reacting quickest as Cesar spilled Javi Martinez's shot to fire Bilbao in front.

The stadium rocked for a matter of minutes though as Pablo Hernandez's clever byline run opened the Basque back line and his cross found Villa at the far post. This time the prolific striker made no mistake, volleying his effort into the turf and finding the far corner of the net to silence San Mames.

After the equaliser the game settled down briefly, until Koikili saw red for a second yellow after a foul on Juan Mata.

Los Che sniffed a sixth away victory which would send them third in the table and substitute Nikola Zigic caused havoc in the Bilbao defence, forcing Iraizoz off his line to punch clear on one occasion. The punch was a poor one and Mathieu smashed a volley home from 15 yards to give the visitors the lead.

Bilbao were then gifted an opportunity to equalise with just four minutes remaining but David Lopez hit the post from the spot after David Navarro had felled Javi Martinez in the box.

The hosts pressed for an equaliser and Iriazoz, up for a flurry of set pieces in stoppage time, almost grabbed it with a late, late header but it wasn't to be.

Los Che, just the second team to win at San Mames this season, jump above the other team to do so, Sevilla, into third place in the Primera Liga. They face Real Madrid next week, with a chance of going second.

Chelsea's Michael Ballack claims the blue half of Manchester could pose as great a threat to the London club's title hopes as their Red Devil neighbours.

United cut Chelsea's Premier League lead to two points on Saturday thanks to the latter's 2-1 defeat by Manchester City, who lay a further nine points back in sixth place after a recent run of draws.

“We respect every team behind us and we lost against a strong team,” the German international told The Times.
“It looks like they are ready to fight for the title. I don’t know what their target is but they showed today that they have a good team and with a bit of luck they can beat teams like us.

Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain has revealed that he has been locked in discussions with Yaya Toure’sagent regarding the player’s future at the club.

Begiristain in unhappy that Toure’s representative Dimitri Seluk has been expressing his concerns in the media over the Ivorian's lack of regular first-team action.

Sky Sports reports that Seluk has urged the Blaugrana to offer Toure a more frequent first-team role, or else be prepared to sell the player during the January transfer window.

Begiristain did not take kindly to Seluk’s comments and hopes that a recent meeting between the pair should put any transfer talk to bed by insisting that the 26-year-old remains part of coach Pep Guardiola’s plans.

“I have contacted the agent and our position is clear,” he said, before adding, “The most important thing is Toure.

“I am satisfied with his performances and with the dialogue between coach and player. They must be the protagonists. In football, interviews are normal for the players, but not so much with agents.”

Edin Dzeko has hinted he would like to move to AC Milan next summer.

But the Bosnia forward had repeatedly hinted that his preferred destination, should he move from Germany, would be Serie A side AC Milan.

Dzeko scored against Sir Alex Ferguson's side when the sides met in the Champions League earlier this season and Phelan has admitted the club have been looking at him since.

Evra and young Belgian Ritchie De Laetare United's only two fit defenders, with reserve player Corry Evans -brother of centre-back Jonny - likely to be called into the squad for Tueday's Champions League clash with Wolfsburg.

Both Neville and Brazilian Fabio are suffering from groin problems, Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand have calf injuries, John O'Shea is out with thigh trouble, while Edwin van der Sar, Rafael and Brown are all missing too.

Young centre-back James Chester, winner of the club's Reserve Player of the Year Award last season, was included in United's Champions League squad, but is currently on-loan at Championship side Plymouth Argyle, while fellow defensive prospect Craig Cathcart is also on-loan, at Watford.

The game started in lively fashion, with Barca dominating possession as expected, but Depor exhibiting their danger on the counter. Chances remained at a premium during the early stages though, with only a volley from Messi and an Ibrahimovic header coming close.

Barca continued to boss the play, and Messi was in thick of it, jinking past about four defenders on 20 minutes, before seeing his shot well saved by Daniel Aranzubia. 'La Pulga' was the most threatening player on the park, and it was no surprise when he got on the scoresheet on 26 minutes. Receiving the ball from Daniel Alves on the edge of the box, he turned brilliantly before firing an unstoppable shot into the bottom right hand corner, to give Barca the lead.

The Blaugrana showed no signs of letting up after scoring, and Depor were struggling to touch the ball at all. Messi was causing havoc, and Ibrahimovic should have done better when played through by the Argentine, but he failed to take it around Aranzubia. Then, on 38 minutes, completely against the run of play, Depor claimed an equalizer. Aranzubia's goal kick was headed into Adrian's path by Sergi Busquets, and the striker in turn headed past Valdes, much to the shock of Pep Guardiola. Valdes could certainly have done more to stop it, and it was a careless mistake from Barca that ruined all their earlier good work.

There was still time for one more chance in the first half, when Ibrahimovic's brilliant backheel released Messi, only for Aranzubia to come to the rescue once more and palm his shot away. That was the last major action of an exciting first half that provided plenty of positives, and some negatives, for both sides.

The second half started in familiar fashion to the first, with Barca controlling all the play, but still looking susceptible to the counter. For all their possession, however, the Blaugrana were not creating the same amount of chances as they were in the first, as fatigue from an eventful journey to A Coruna perhaps began to show.

On the hour mark, Miguel Angel Lotina made the first change of the match, taking Adrian off for Juca. For the first time, both sides were getting sloppy, with a number of misplaced passes preventing any serious threats at goal. In an effort to change that, Guardiola replaced Thierry Henry with Pedro, as the clock struck 70 minutes.

Depor continued to frustrate Barca as the match wore down, with Messi providing the only direct threat with his trademark dribbling. It looked as though the Blaugrana would struggle to find another goal, but then, with ten minutes remaining, the Ballon D'Or winner showed just why he won the award. Pedro did well to chip the ball into his path near the six yard box, and Messi showed another string to his bow, as he headed past Aranzubia into the bottom corner.

Depor continued to fight valiantly after going behind, but Barca still looked the more likely to score, with Messi coming close again with another header. However, with four minutes left, the home side wasted a glorious chance to equalize, as Guardado's square ball failed to find Bodipo, who would only have had Valdes to beat.

It was to be a costly miss, as Barca scored their third seconds later, to seal the victory. On a rare foray forward, Eric Abidal played an excellent ball into the box, whereIbrahimovic was waiting to smash home a sublime first time effort into the roof of the net.

That proved to be the final action of the match, as Barca claimed a hard-fought but well deserved win, to maintain their five point lead on top of the table.

"I like him but he must improve aspects of his behaviour," he said. "Today after three incidents he threw himself to the floor. However, our fans behaved well, and I'm happy for that."

Juve's rookie coach Ciro Ferrara quickly turned his attention to Tuesday's Champions League home match with Bayern Munich, where a point will put them through to the last 16.

"We deserved the victory but now we have to think about Tuesday. There are certain games that stimulate great players. It has been great to beat the champions," he said.

Inter coach Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands during the match and did not do post-match interviews, leaving goalkeeper Julio Cesar to complain about the lack of penalties when Walter Samuel and Diego Milito went down.

Arsene Wenger has received some welcome news on the injury front, with the Arsenal boss revealing Robin van Persie and Kieran Gibbs both had successful surgery.

Arsene Wenger knows he needs to replace the injured Robin Van Persie.

Van Persie, 26, suffered an ankle injury while on international duty with Holland and will be out for around five months, but Wenger is relieved that there were no complications with his operation. Left-back Kieran Gibbs, who has gone under the knife for his fractured foot, also came through as well as could be hoped.

"Kieran is doing very well,'' Wenger said. "I had him on the phone and it looked to be completely fine. I have not talked to Robin yet but there again the news I got from the surgery was it went very, very well. There was a lot of disturbance on our side recently [about his injury] but the surgery went well.''

Andrey Arshavin has highlighted the problem of holding the ball up in attack without Van Persie. The previously free-scoring team have not found the net in three domestic league and cup games since Van Persie's injury, although they managed a 2-0 win over Standard Liege in the Champions League.

Having just faced Barcelona's all-star attack in midweek, Xerez's defence have little chance for respite as they prepare to take on an Atletico Madrid forward line that, according to midfielder Carlos Calvo, is one of the best in the game.

Promoted Xerez remained rooted to the foot of the Primera Division after losing 2-0 at home to Barca on Wednesday in a fixture brought forward due to the Catalan side's commitments in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Jose Angel Ziganda's side made it difficult for the champions and the result was still in doubt until Barca substitute Zlatan Ibrahimovic lobbed home his side's second in injury-time.

Xerez's defence coped reasonably well with Barca's much-vaunted strikeforce, but Calvo believes they will need to be just as good tomorrow when Atletico duo Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero come to town.

Forlan won the European Golden Boot for the second time last season after netting 32 goals in La Liga, while he and highly-rated Argentinian Aguero have struck 10 times between them in the league already this season.

"They have two of the best strikers in the world, Aguero and Forlan,'' said Calvo. "We have to make sure they have a bad game and give the best of ourselves.''

Xerez's defeat to Barca has left them with just seven points and four goals from 13 games, and they are already three points adrift of Atletico in 17th.

Atletico climbed out of the relegation zone with a 4-0 mauling of Espanyol last weekend and Calvo concedes the capital club will be in high spirits for the trip south.

He added: "They are going to arrive full of confidence. They haven't played at the level they can do and the place they are in now is not the one they will be in at the end of the season.

"Saturday's game is very important. We need to try and pick up six points before the winter break.''

Aside from the Barca defeat, Xerez's preparations for the Atletico clash were further disrupted on Thursday when president Carlos de Osma resigned.

Atletico finally gave their fans something to shout about following a dismal start to the season with the win over Espanyol.

That was only the second league triumph of a campaign which has so far been utterly forgettable both domestically and in Europe, where Atletico have already bid farewell to the Champions League.

However, the Rojiblancos now have a great chance to put further distance between themselves and the relegation zone, and defender Pablo Ibanez hopes they can take advantage.

"The present is Xerez,'' he said. "There's no need to think beyond that. Hopefully we can continue with our positive run.

"The squad's mental state is good. Now we have to follow the same line of work that we showed last Sunday. The side from Andalusia is a good one, but we have to go for the three points. Of course, we always have to respect the opponent.''

Atletico coach Quique Sanchez Flores has had fitness concerns about Jose Antonio Reyes, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Sergio Asenjo, but all three look on course to make Saturday's game.

Sevilla winger Diego Capel has warned his team-mates not to underestimate the threat posed by Real Valladolid despite their position at the wrong end of the table.

Including their dismal form at the end of last season, Valladolid have won just two of their last 23 league matches and make the trip to Andalusia stuck in the bottom six of the Primera Division, four points above the relegation zone.

In contrast, Sevilla are third in the table after accumulating 26 points from a possible 36 and a victory on Saturday could lift them above Real Madrid and into second if the capital club slip up against Almeria.

Capel is taking nothing for granted though, perhaps recalling last season's match away to Valladolid when Sevilla capitulated after going 2-0 up inside 24 minutes, Manolo Jimenez's side eventually losing 3-2 after having striker Luis Fabiano sent off in the 34th minute.

"We cannot be overconfident. The teams who are hurting are the ones that make you suffer more,'' Capel said.

"Maybe they aren't coming here in a great moment, but they are going to come here to play their game and they are going to make things difficult for us.''

Capel looked to be the next big thing to come off the Sevilla production line when he broke onto the scene a few years ago.

However, he has found his playing time limited in recent times, largely due to the emergence of Argentinian starlet Diego Perotti.

This season Perotti has made 11 starts in the Primera Division and the Champions League, whereas fellow 21-year-old Capel has just four.

"I'm calm, I have a player in front of me who is having some very good games, but I'm never going to give up,'' said twice-capped Spain international Capel.

"These types of circumstances make you stronger. I'm not giving up, I'm going to continue working hard because there are a lot of games to play in.''

Valladolid were held to a hugely disappointing 3-3 draw at home by promoted Tenerife at the weekend after surrendering a 3-0 lead with less than 30 minutes to go.

Despite that setback, Valladolid coach Jose Luis Mendilibar insists his side have what it takes to cause an upset against Sevilla this weekend, even though he knows it is going to be tough.

"We know how they play, with two fast and skilful wingers and strong and technically good strikers, although it is a different matter being able to counter their offensive power,'' said Mendilibar.

"They have the most complete squad in the league. They have strong players, technical, fast, good in the air.

"The key is to try and scare them and get into their area. Then we would have a chance of winning. I'm convinced that we are capable of creating a surprise.''

Diego Costa, who scored twice against Tenerife, looks to have shaken off his injury problem ahead of the game, likewise with Marcos and Fabian Canobbio, but Pedro Lopez and Sisi are sidelined.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has urged his table-topping side to keep improving ahead of Saturday night's trip to Deportivo La Coruna in the Primera Division.

Barca were not entirely convincing in last Sunday's home win over Real Madrid in `El Clasico' and needed two moments of brilliance from Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to brush aside bottom club Xerez on Wednesday.

Barca now travel to in-form Deportivo and Guardiola expects another difficult match.

"Barca have only won in Coruna three times in the last 17 years,'' he said.

"It's very important that we win - they are a great team and it's a difficult ground to go to, so a win would give us a big boost.''

Last season's treble winners have drawn three of their last four league matches on the road and were far from their brilliant best as they laboured to a 2-0 win at Xerez in midweek.

And Guardiola wants to see an improvement.

"There will not be a repeat of a game like the one in Jerez,'' he said.

"We are not happy just to win, because we always have to try to do better - that is how we have won people's respect and we have to keep on winning their respect.''

Barcelona's match against Xerez was put forward due to the Catalans' participation in the forthcoming World Club Championship, which starts next week.

Guardiola's side now lead La Liga by five points from bitter rivals Madrid, but have played one more game than Manuel Pellegrini's side.

Madrid are in action at home to Almeria directly before Barca take to the field at Riazor, and the Catalans will be keen to travel to Dubai later this month with their current advantage intact.

Guardiola welcomes back centre-back Gerard Pique, who missed the trip to Jerez through injury, while Sergio Busquets is available again after suspension.

Rafael Marquez is short of fitness, though, and has been left out for the trip to Galicia.

"He is short of physical toning, but he will soon be an essential player for us again,'' Guardiola said.

Barcelona have lost just once in 23 competitive matches so far this season and the Catalans are yet to taste defeat in the Primera Division.

Deportivo, meanwhile, have been a revelation so far this term.

The Galicians have won eight of their 12 league matches so far and currently sit in fifth position, level on points with fourth-placed Valencia.

Miguel Angel Lotina's side have won their last three league matches and midfielder Sergio Gonzalez believes they can halt Barcelona.

"To stop Barcelona, you need to stop the supply line to their strikers from midfield, and to do that takes four, five or even six players, but it can be done,'' he said.

But the Catalan midfielder insists defence is not the entire solution.

"You can't just defend because in the end, Barcelona will score one of the chances they create - you need balance, plus a lot of support, and you can't play too far forward or too far back,'' he said.

Juca and Rodolfo Bodipo are back for tomorrow night's clash, but Riki is suspended and Lassad Nouioui misses out through injury.

PREDICTION

After fluffing their feathers in El Clasico, Madrid were unlucky to not come away with at least one goal. Now, Los Blancos must build upon that momentum and clinically dispatch Almeria. With their confidence high, this match could be dangerous in that it is one that could be easily overlooked. Manchester City's 11-game unbeaten run sounds hugely impressive on the surface; no defeats since a loss to Manchester United in a closely contested 4-3 loss back in September suggests progress at Eastlands, but the reality is slightly different.

League Cup victories over a youthful Arsenal team, Fulham and Scunthorpe aside, Mark Hughes' men have only recorded one win during that run. Hard to beat maybe, but relinquishing leads to Fulham, Burnley, Liverpool and Hull City is hardly the form of pretenders to the throne.

Hughes must be aware of the importance of transforming some of those draws into wins, and soon, as the halfway point in the season rapidly approaches. Beat Chelsea and the gap will shrink, while many a pundit may begin to sing the praises of the blue side of Manchester as if it were August all over again.

Roman Abramovich meanwhile has seen an influx of foreign investors since he spearheaded the revolution of vast riches in June 2003, but none have quite matched his financial muscle like City's investors. For the first time on Saturday, the world will finally see if Sheikh Mansour's billions can overthrow the Roman Empire.

It is an empire that remains incomplete of course, as the Champions League continues to elude Abramovich, but the Premier League could well be returning to Stamford Bridge come May, especially given the strong start made under Carlo Ancelotti.

Chelsea have after all set the pace in the league thus far and show little signs of letting up, having beaten all challengers – reigning champions Manchester United included. City, although 12 points adrift of the Blues, represent another club looking to dislodge them; overcoming the wealth of talent at Hughes' disposal will deliver a further statement of intent.

Portsmouth Confirm Players Have Been Paid

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has confirmed that the playing staff at Fratton Park have been paid for the month of November.

Reports circulated on Thursday evening that, for the second time this season, Pompey had been unable to pay their players.

However, Storrie has today revealed that the situation has now been resolved.

"Yes, they have been [paid]," Storrie confirmed, speaking to Sky Sports News.

"I'm pleased to say that through the funds we had in the bank this morning we managed to get 25% first thing and this afternoon Ali [al Faraj] and his advisers have sorted out the small problem there was and it's now done.

"The players have been paid in full I'm pleased to say. I understand the refinancing that they're getting together - because there's a lot of debt they have to deal with - is actually going very well now and they want a bit of understanding from the fans.

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes wants to move on from the controversy which has surrounded Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's refusal to shake the Welshman's hand in the wake of Wednesday night's League Cup quarter-final.

Hughes insists that the incident has been blown out of all proportion and now needs consigning to the history books, as he prepares his side for the visit of Chelsea on Saturday.

Wenger himself has given no reason for the snub, though it is widely believed that Hughes swore at him during the game.

"We keep revisiting things that have already occurred," Hughes told reporters at his Friday press conference.

"Everybody has had their say on what happened.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has spoken out over his refusal to offer his hand to Mark Hughes at the end of the Gunners' recent 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

The Frenchman claimed that it is important courtesy and behaviour are upheld, as opposed to a ceremonial handshake, and indicated that even if Arsenal had gone on to beat City, he still would not have shaken Hughes' hand at the end of the game.

"By coincidence I manage my 500th game and I think I have shaken hands 497 times," he said in a pre-match press conference.

"It is a courtesy, ceremonial, but the most important is the courtesy and behaviour [during the game]. I do not deny I am a bad loser," Wenger conceded.

"I would have done exactly the same had we have won or lost the game, and I don't change. I maintain exactly what I did," he said defiantly.

Wenger has been witness to a number of touchline wars, including tiffs with former Tottenham Hotspur manager Martin Jol, and ex-West Ham United boss Alan Pardew. However, he added that he would not comment on managers to the press after any on-field incident.

"I treat this kind of thing with distance, I don't want to make a fuss.

"You have seen me have [altercations] on the touchline but you will never see me make a comment about a manager after the game."

Inter Appeal Over Maicon Suspension Rejected

Jose Mourinho may have picked Maicon in his Inter squad to face Juventus on Saturday, but he will not play though as the authorities throw out the club's appeal against a two game ban.

Sky Sport Italia claim the club's appeal to have the ban cut to one game, which would have made Maicon eligible, has been rejected.

Maicon was sent off during the win against Bologna two weeks ago for insulting the linesman. He received a two match ban, one of which was served last week against Fiorentina.

Inter appealed the original decision to have the suspension reduced so their player would be available for the clash against Juve. Mourinho seemed confident he would win the appeal after naming Maicon in his squad for tomorrow's game.

The decision appears to have back fired though as the Lega Calcio's arbitration panel rejected the appeal after hearing a Nerazzurri club lawyer argue their case on Friday afternoon.

The decision has been confirmed by the Calcio authorities, but they are yet to release an official statement.

Blackburn's league form hardly reflects such a fine result. They presently lie 13th in the table, five points clear of the relegation zone and eight adrift of the Champions League slots – it is, at least, a marked improvement on their early-season achievements under Paul Ince last term.

On Saturday they will have the chance to claim another big scalp, although the Reds look to be on the mend after a horrendous run that has seen them bow out of the Champions League and slip well behind in the title race.

Liverpool eased their European woes somewhat last weekend when they downed bitter rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby. Rafael Benitez's men may have been on the back foot for much of the contest, but Pepe Reina's efforts in goal ensured a 2-0 win to the visitors.

Those three points boosted the Red into fifth place, two points behind Arsenal – although the Gunners have a game in hand.

UEFA has announced the nominees for the 2009 Team of the Year. Fans have until 8 January 2010 to select their star performers from a list of 60 players and coaches who have shone in the last 12 months.

Champions League winners FC Barcelona lead the nominations with eleven players plus coach Josep Guardiola in the running, while beaten finalists Manchester United FC have six players plus manager Sir Alex Ferguson facing the vote.

West Ham have struggled badly in the Premier League so far. After finishing in a respectable ninth place last season, Gianfranco Zola’s team are currently battling relegation having picked up just 14 points from as many matches – leaving them in 17th spot.

The Hammers have certainly been an exciting team to watch this year. They are having no problems scoring; indeed they have bagged 22 goals in their last 11 games. However, over the same period they have conceded 26, highlighting the problems for Zola.

Manchester United’s youngsters recorded an important 2-0 League Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur in midweek, but it will be the more established stars returning to the team for this trip to the capital.

Wayne Rooney bagged a hat-trick against Portsmouth last week and certainly looks set to challenge the likes of Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres and Jermain Defoe to be the Premier League’s top goal-scorer this season. With 10 to his name already, the England striker will be confident of adding to that tally.

PREDICTION

West Ham are scoring goals freely, which gives them an excellent chance of beating the drop, but they do need to tighten things up at the other end.

Manchester United cannot afford many more slip-ups having already lost three times in seven away league matches to date, although few will be expecting them to add to that tally here.

It is hard to look past an away victory in a game which should have plenty of goals.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti is treating Manchester United with the utmost respect before his team travel to Eastlands on Saturday.

City can reach an English club record of eight consecutive league draws against the Londoners, but Ancelotti believes that their comprehensive victory over Arsenal in midweek means that Mark Hughes's side have now rediscovered some form.

"Tomorrow we have to play against a dangerous team, because Manchester City has a lot of players with very good technical quality, top players," Ancelotti said, according to his club's official website.

"They didn't win the last seven games and they want to win against Chelsea because we are top of the list. They will have very good motivation to play against us and we have to pay attention to this."

And Ancelotti feels that the Citizens have every chance of cracking the top four this season.

"I think so," he mused. "They have a possibility because they have a good squad, but when they change a lot of players in the season with a new squad, it is not easy to have the time to put a team on the pitch, to find immediately the right way."

Chelsea themselves lost at Blackburn Rovers in their own League Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night, but Ancelotti does not see that as a major setback.

"Every defeat normally is not good, but the priority of that game was to give minutes to the players that didn't play against Arsenal and to give experience to young players," he added.

"Our priority was that, and also a chance to give recovery to the other players.

"The League Cup was not so important, if we thought it was more important I would put in a different line-up. We are not disappointed, we showed good spirit, playing 60 minutes with 10 against 11, and drew in the last minute. This means we have a very good spirit, and this is important.

"We kept a lot of players in the training ground and they trained well, so for tomorrow we have a fresh team.

Inter coach Jose Mourinho has played down the importance of the derby d'Italia against Juventus, claiming his side will still be in an advantageous position regardless of the result.

Despite all the hype, rivalry and tradition surrounding the game, as well as its significance, Mourinho is treating it as just another fixture on the calendar.

Rosario Coppola, a former linesman in Serie A, has accused Inter of trying to influence referees as the Calcipoli trial in Naples uncovers more shock revelations.

Coppola told judges at Friday's hearing that Inter tried to use their powers to influence him so he could downplay an incident where Ivan Cordoba had punched an oppenent during a game against Venezia.

"I was told that the people from the disciplinary panel would be calling me to give evidence regarding Cordoba," Coppola told the court, as reported by Tuttosport.

Inter had complained, claiming it was push, not a punch. I was told that Inter were an important club, and that I should alter the facts of the incident. I refused to do that and as a result, I never saw Serie A again.

“All the clubs with power, with the greater weight, they all made recommendations or signals.”

Luciano Moggi's lawyer was also at the hearing, and he claims Coppola's statements to the court show that Calciopoli was used to plot Juventus' fall from grace.

"With Coppola's words we have another example that the objective was to hit Juventus and Moggi," lawyer Maurilio Pioreschi concluded.

Adem Ljajic's Transfer To Manchester United Scuppered By Work Permit Issues - Mike Phelan

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has refuted suggestions that his club cancelled the deal to bring teenager Adem Ljajic to Old Trafford from Partizan Belgrade for financial reasons.

Instead, Phelan insists that a work permit and the player's ability relative to the personnel already at the club were the actual reasons behind the £10 million deal's collapse.

"We made a tentative approach to getting a work permit and the word we got back from the Home Office was we couldn't get that through in time to get Adem signed in January," Phelan told reporters at a press conference on Friday.

"The point is do you lay out money for Adem knowing there is a possibility that you might not be able to get him? As it stands Adem Ljajic won't be coming to Old Trafford in January."

David Trezeguet Has Juventus In His Veins - Agent

Chelsea Forward Salomon Kalou Faces Two Weeks Out
